Cookie Notice

Effective date: 06/12/2026

This Cookie Notice supplements the Privacy Policyand explains the cookies and similar tracking technologies (collectively, “cookies”) used on PlotCipher, what they do, how long they last, and how to control them.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file stored on your browser when you visit a website. It allows the site to remember information about your visit. We also use related technologies such as local storage, session storage, and pixels — all are covered by this Notice.

Categories of cookies we use

A. Strictly necessary

Required for the Service to function. You cannot opt out without losing access.

  • next-auth.session-token — keeps you signed in. Duration: session or 30 days if “remember me.”
  • next-auth.callback-url — preserves the page you intended to visit before signing in. Duration: session.
  • next-auth.csrf-token — prevents cross-site request forgery. Duration: session.
  • plotcipher_demo_user_id (localStorage) — anonymous identifier for demo users; not personal information. Duration: persistent until you clear it.

B. Functional

Remember preferences and improve usability. Optional but recommended.

  • plotcipher_explore_state (sessionStorage) — your most recent map filters and viewport. Duration: tab session.
  • plotcipher_explore_cache (sessionStorage) — short-lived cache of parcel data to avoid repeat fetches. Duration: 5 minutes.
  • plotcipher_compare_list (localStorage) — parcels you've added to compare. Duration: persistent until cleared.
  • plotcipher_nav_history (sessionStorage) — back-button context. Duration: tab session.

C. Analytics

Aggregate usage data. We use PostHog with IP anonymization where supported. You can opt out via the cookie banner or by enabling the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser.

  • Provider-set cookies as detailed in the analytics provider's own privacy policy.
  • Typical duration: 1-13 months depending on provider.

D. Marketing

Currently not used. If we add marketing cookies in the future, we will update this Notice and request consent via the cookie banner before any non-essential marketing cookie is set.

How to control cookies

  • In-app: our cookie banner (shown on first visit and reopenable via the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer) lets you enable or disable analytics cookies. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be disabled.
  • Browser settings: all modern browsers let you block, delete, or restrict cookies via settings. Doing so may break some functionality.
  • Global Privacy Control (GPC): we honor GPC signals as a valid opt-out of analytics/sharing for users in California, Colorado, and Connecticut.
  • Do Not Track (DNT): there is no industry standard for DNT response and we do not act on DNT signals; we do honor GPC.

Changes

We will update this Notice when we add or remove cookies. The effective date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
